Professor Radhamohan died June 11, 2021, at the age of 78 in Bhubaneswar. He was an ecological economist who also practised what he preached.
His economic visions were shaped by the experiences of farmers. When the policymakers advocated a shift away from farming to tackle poverty and mass unemployment, his prescription for eradicating poverty in the country was sustainable agriculture.
He and his daughter Sabarmatee started a non-profit called Sambhav in 1989. Sambhav works on organic farming and ecological conservation in the Nayagarh district of Odisha. Nearly three decades later, they converted 90 acres of degraded land into a lush food forest.
They also collect, grow and preserve nearly 800 varieties of traditional seeds. More than half of these are paddy seeds that can grow under different climatic systems. A lot of them withstood the regular cyclonic storms in the region. The father-daughter duo was honoured with the Padma Shri for their work in organic farming.
