COVID-19 scare at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are rising at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. As many as 71 people tested positive for COVID-19, according to the organisers. These include athletes, officials, media people, and contractors.

United States gymnastics athlete Kara Eaker and Czech volleyball player Ondřej PeruSič are the latest to test positive. On July 17, 10 people, including two South African football players staying at the athlete's village, tested positive for the virus.

The games will start on July 23, 2021 in Japan’s capital city Tokyo. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics was postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only 68,500 people including athletes, officials and media will be entering Japan for the Olympics and Paralympics. No spectators or fans are allowed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games. The Olympics won’t have dazzling and spectacular opening ceremonies like the previous Olympics. It will be a simpler and more controlled event to reduce coronavirus infection risks.
