As cases of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus increase in India and countries such as the United Kingdom report their first Omicron death, conversations around booster doses have gained momentum.
A booster shot is said to provide increased protection against the novel coronavirus as antibodies and T-cells decrease over time.
But when a person’s immunity wanes, it does not necessarily mean that a person will be infected severely again. The body’s memory response will instruct the immune system to generate more antibodies in case of a re-infection.
While vaccines protect the body against disease, they do not necessarily fight symptomatic reinfection. But a lot goes behind acquiring and administering booster doses.
