The chemical formulation of ‘green’ crackers has been finalised, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) told the Supreme Court on February 5, 2019.

The improved crackers will cut PM 2.5 emission by up to 30 per cent, they told the SC. The apex court asked CSIR and NEERI to formulate the new composition.

The Court also banned the manufacture of normal crackers in 2018. Bulk manufacturing of the low-polluting crackers can start in May after Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) clears them, according to media reports on March 5, 2019.
