Early warning system for extreme weather landslides in India
Can it save lives in the future?
India rolled out its first regional early warning system for rain-induced landslides on July 19, 2024.
This was just two weeks before the devastating Wayanad landslide tragedy, which claimed around 400 lives, and injured and displaced hundreds more. The central government activated this new Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) for three regions in the country.
