College without network

Social networking sites were blocked for a week in September by Eric Darr, the provost of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania.

It was an experiment to gauge the influence of overpowering social media sites and analyse the effects they have on the psyche of the young. Some students were quite disgruntled over the restricted access to the Internet. A few managed to reroute Internet access via Norway or Canada or used proxy websites.

While others, who initially felt fidgety and tried to log in to the sites every few minutes, realised they were addicted to facebook and tweeting.

Many of them could concentrate better in classes. Students made efforts to interact with people face to face.

Some students who are willing to participate again in a month-long experiment, this time without access to even e-mails and texts.
