COVID-19 Update: Weekend curfew declared in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal declared a weekend curfew in the city after meeting with the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal April 15, 2021, according to NDTV. The step has been taken to curtail the rising cases of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the city.

Auditoriums, malls, gyms and spas will be shut down and cinema theatres will be allowed with a third of the capacity, according to the government. Eating out will be closed and only home deliveries of food will be allowed. Weekend markets will be allowed with restrictions.

Essential activities, including weddings planned already, will be allowed with curfew passes.

• A total of 14,074,564 cases have been registered since the beginning of the pandemic in India, out of which 1,471,877 are active cases. As many as 173,123 people have died, according to figures released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) at 8 am April 15, 2021.
• A total of 114,493,238 people have been vaccinated since the start of vaccination January 16, 2021, according to MoHFW.
• Maharashtra registered the highest number of new positive cases in the past 24 hours — 19,050 — according to the ministry. The state now has 613,635 positive cases. There have been 58,804 deaths in the state.
• Uttar Pradesh has registered the second highest number of new positive cases —15,855 — according to MoHFW. The state now has 111,835 positive cases.
• Odisha will not hold the Class 10 and Class 12 Board Exams on their scheduled dates, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced April 15, according to media reports.
•  Uttar Pradesh has also deferred Board Exams for now. Night curfew — already in place in state capital Lucknow, Prayagraj, Noida, Kanpur, Varanasi, Meerut and Ghaziabad — will now begin from 8 pm and end at 7 am, according to a new order passed by the state government.
• Pakistan recorded 5,395 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s COVID-19 tally to 739,818, the Express Tribune reported.
• Some 170 former country leaders and Nobel Prize laureates have called on the US to waive intellectual property rules for COVID-19 vaccines to give poorer countries faster access to inoculations, News18.com reported.
• The health secretary of Brazil's richest state, Sao Paulo, has written to the federal government in Brasilia, warning that its health system was on the verge of collapse due to shortage of drugs, Reuters reported.
• Denmark has become the first country in the world to stop using the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Swedish manufacturer AstraZeneca and Oxford University, stating that it caused blood clots, according to media reports.
