Osram-Sylvania Inc of usa has unveiled a new kind of fluorescent lamp that promises to increase the life of fluorescent tubes three fold. The tubes can then glow for about 60,000 hours. The secret behind this is the use of magnetic-induction technology to generate light-producing electrons. This technology does away with electrodes at both ends of a fluorescent tube. These electrodes are, usually, a fluorescent tube's most vulnerable parts. These long-life lamps will be available in the market from 1997 (Business Week, December 23, 1996).
