Message in a bottle

Last year after the devastating tsunami hit Japan and flooded its east coast, everything from hard hats to toothbrushes started being found on the beaches of Alaska and Canada. With 1.5 million items washed out to sea, Daily Mail reports, a Canadian museum has come up with a novel idea on how to return the lost property to its owners over 6,000 kilometres away.

Using a Facebook page, the Maritime Museum of British Columbia will allow users to upload photos of bits found along the beaches or floating across the Pacific Ocean. Japanese visitors to the site could scan the site for lost or recognisable items. The item could then be returned to its owner through the Japanese Consulate.
