>> Journalists were killed in unusually high numbers in 2007, making it the deadliest year for the press in more than a decade, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists' end-of-year analysis. Worldwide, 64 journalists were killed in direct connection to their work in 2007--up from 56 last year.

>> Children may soon have a learning tool covering areas such as culture, ecology and history: Encyclo-paedia Indica Kids, an open source encyclopaedia. The director of the National Folklore Support Centre, Chennai, M D Muthukumaraswamy is developing the compendium. It aims to collect information on ecology as understood in Indian folk art and as classified in science.
