Thefamous i9th century pipe organat the Notre Dame Cathedral inParis has gone hi-tech. The Frenchministry of culture has spent US$2.2 million to digitise the organ.Now, a system of microprocessorsand sensors interprets how the keysand pedals have been pressed. Thesystem, once perfected, will allowthe players to instantly access anyone of the unlimited number ofcombinations of the organ's 140registers (Communications ofACM,Vol 38, No 6).
