The Political Economy Research Institute (peri) at the University of Massachusetts has recently come out with a list of top 100 polluters in the us. Called Toxic 100 , the index identifies the top air polluters among corporations that appear in Fortune 500, Forbes 500, and Standard and Poor 500 lists of the country's largest firms. El Du Pont de Nemours and Company, us Steel, ConocoPhillips, General Electricals and Eastman Kodak are the worst offenders.

The rankings are based on quantum and toxicity of industrial releases, and effects on people. " Toxic 100 informs consumers about the large industries that pollute the most," said James K Boyce, director of peri's environment programme. The index has details of toxins emitted, including exact amounts released by each company and the numbers at risk. Data on chemical releases comes from the us Environmental Protection Agency. "Our goal is to help residents translate the right to know into the right to clean air," said Boyce.
