How farmers united in Punjab and Haryana during the 2023 floods

In times of erratic weather, global warming and natural disasters, farmers in Punjab and Haryana have united in the face of adversity. As repeated floods ruin the crop this monsoon, efficient networks of Kisan Unions across these states have got down to work.

For every farmer whose crop has been ruined, there is another one who is sending him saplings from hundreds of kilometres away. The best part of this whole system is that farmers and villages who are extending help worth crores sometimes, do not even know who they are helping.

There are several reasons for this unseen solidarity. As the central and state governments linger on with help, farmer unions have been brought together by a shared history.

The Green Revolution made this belt extremely powerful when it came to food security and financial stability. It gave them the strength and confidence to withhold and bear with extremely harsh circumstances.

Moreover, the 13-month - long farm struggle in 2020-21 where they were united to repeal the farm laws has also connected them with one ideology. All of these reasons have not just helped these two states recover from a natural disaster but also reignited hope in humanity.
