UK-based animal welfare group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals has been campaigning against Indian leather, alleging ill-treatment of animals in the slaughter houses here. This has had a great impact on the Indian export with countries like UK and Germany banning the Indian leather. Doubts, however, persist about the sincerity of peta's move considering animals are slaughtered mainly for meat in these slaughter houses. There is also a campaign against cattle milk consumption, which peta claims to be unhygienic and another example of animal cruelty.
