
A low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Konkan-Goa coast is likely to intensify into a depression by the evening of May 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Konkan & Goa during May 22-24 and over Coastal Karnataka on May 24. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over Kerala and Karnataka till May 28, with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kilometres per hour) over the south peninsula.
In West India, fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and squally winds (50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph) is expected over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada on May 22-23 and over Gujarat from May 25-28.
In the northwest, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of West Rajasthan during May 22-24 and in East Rajasthan on May 22-24. Heatwave conditions are also expected in Jammu, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh and north Madhya Pradesh on May 22-23. Warm night conditions will prevail over parts of West Rajasthan and South Haryana.
Thunderstorms with gusty winds (50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph) are likely over Uttarakhand during May 22-24 and over West Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh on May 23-24. An isolated hailstorm is expected over Himachal Pradesh on May 23-24.
In East and Central India, thunderstorms with gusty winds and isolated heavy rainfall are likely over Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Chhattisgarh on May 22-23 and over Odisha on May 27-28. Squally winds (50-60 kmph) may affect East Madhya Pradesh during May 22-25 and Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand on May 22-23.
The Northeast will continue to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) throughout the week. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Assam, Meghalaya (May 22-27), Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura (May 22-25) and Arunachal Pradesh (May 23-26).
In Delhi-National Capital Region, maximum temperatures are likely to remain below normal during May 22-25, with chances of light rain and thunderstorms with gusty winds (up to 50 kmph), especially during the evening and night hours.
Conditions are becoming favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala in the next 2-3 days, with further advancement over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and parts of Northeast India expected soon.
