THE Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the last monsoon was the country's 11th successive monsoon. Of the total geographical area, 89 per cent had received normal to excess rainfall. Thirteen to 35 meteorological sub-divisions had received excess rainfall and 20 sub-divisions has experienced normal rains. Rainfall was below normal only in Orissa and east Madhya Pradesh. There, too, the shortcoming was marginal.

However, the picture was different at the micro level. Of the 422 districts, 19 per cent had deficient rainfall. According to the IMD director-general, R Kelkar, the department hopes to come out with sub-division wise and month wise forecast of the south west monsoon from next year.
