Scientists working on the carcass of a whale that was washed up on the shores of southern Japan in July 2002 have confirmed that it is the first adult find of a very rare species -- the Longman's Beaked whale. The 6.5-metre female was buried soon after it was found.

So far, the remains of this species have been found only five other times in locations as far off as Australia, South Africa and Somalia. But they were either of infants or the mere skeleton.
