Wetlands Ramsar Convention, Uganda
Pioneers from Iran, China, Japan and Australia were presented the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards at the Ninth Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention in Kampala, Uganda. The award is presented every three years for significant contribution to wetland conservation. A Nezami Baloochi of Iran was given the management award. This official of the department for environment of Iran's Gilan province was feted for his scheme to manage the 15,000-hectare Anzali Wetland in his province. Shuming Cai, professor at Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing, was presented the award under the science category for his research on the effects of the Three-Gorges dam project on the environment. In the education category, the award was shared between Reiko Nakamura, an environmental journalist from Japan -- for her role in fostering wetland conservation through creation of Ramsar Centre Japan in 1990 -- and the Wetland Centre, Australia.
