World's top 10 toxic threats

New report rates Bangladesh and Russia the worst
Published on

A new report on the world's top 10 worst polluted sites has rated Bangladesh and Russia the worst. Four of the sites identified are located here, two in each country. The report has been prepared by non-governmental organisations Green Cross and Blacksmith Institute.

The report highlights some of the world's worst polluted places, presents examples of successful cleanup projects, and outlines the world's worst pollution problems. It covers a wide range of polluted places, ranging from industrial plants and mining facilities, through industrial estates and SME clusters, to areas of polluted air and water, and some major industrial disasters. The criteria used in identifying these sites included the size of the population affected; the potency of the toxicants involved; and clearly established pathways and impacts.
