How damaging Cyclone Amphan was for the Sundarbans
Cyclone Amphan caused major damage across south Bengal, including the Sundarbans and across the Odisha coast on May 20, 2020. Communication infrastructure, including telephone networks, were damaged in the Sundarbans.
The Sundarbans were severely impacted after Cyclone Amphan made landfall on May 20 afternoon.
The landfall in the Sundarbans continued till about 6.30 pm. It occurred opposite Lothian island, close to Gangadharpur near Kakdwip.
Sagar, Namkhana, Kultali and Patharpratima blocks in the Sundarbans were the most affected. The damage seemed to be enormous, said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who requested help from the Union government on humanitarian grounds.
A resident of Mousuni island in the Sundarbans, said a large portion of the island was inundated. “We now have no clue as to how deadly the damage has been,” said SK Adalat.
Embankments were broken in Hingalgunge, located in 24 Paraganas district, while Sagar Island was cut off from the mainland as a jetty collapsed
Very little information could be gathered from the Sundarbans on the extent of the damage there, as the region was cut off after telephone lines and other communication infrastructure was damaged due to the disaster.
