Published: Sunday 31 December 2000

The Lucknow high court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to purchase all the paddy crops grown in the state within the next two and a half months. The state's paddy growers are on the verge of starvation as they have not been able to find buyers for their produce. The state government has so far purchased only 100,000 tonnes of paddy from the farmers, while the total production was 5.5 million tonnes. The state government has been directed to seek the help from the Food Corporation of India.
