As told to Parliament (August 4, 2021): 183 arrested, bailed in eight months of farmers’ protests

All that was discussed in the Houses through the day

Some 183 people had been arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the farmers’ protest since November 26, 2020 up to July 20, 2021. All of them are out on bail, Nityanand Rai, minister of state in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs told the Rajya Sabha.

Women workers

The estimated female labour force participation rate during 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20, was 23.3 per cent, 24.5 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively, Rameswar Teli, Union minister of state for labour and employment told the Rajya Sabha.

These figures were according to the results of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Statistical Office under the Union Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Teli said.

Urban unemployment

The quarterly unemployment rate in  urban  areas  for  persons  of  age  15  years  and  above  for  the  quarter  ending  July-September  2019,  October-December  2019,  January-March  2020,  April-June 2020 and July-Sep 2020 was 8.3 per cent, 7.8 per cent, 9.1 per cent, 20.8 per cent and 13.2 per cent respectively, Teli told the Rajya Sabha.

Asbestos mines

Currently no asbestos mine was functional in India, Pralhad Joshi, Union minister of mines, coal and parliamentary affairs told the Lok Sabha. This was according to the information made available by the Indian Bureau of Mines, a subordinate office under the Union Ministry of Mines.

Urban housing

Some 11.3 million houses had been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) scheme, Hardeep Singh Puri, Union minister of housing and urban affairs told the Rajya Sabha August 4, 2021.

Some 8.4 million houses had been grounded for construction and over five million had been delivered to beneficiaries, Puri added.

Oxygen Express

A total of 920 ‘Oxygen Express’ trains were run by the Indian Railways till July 27, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union minister of railways told the Lok Sabha. The trains carried 38,420.61 tonnes of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO).  

Sand mining

The Supreme Court had banned all the 82 mining lease holders in Rajasthan from carrying out mining of sand and gravel through its order dated November 16, 2017, Joshi told the Lok Sabha.

The ban was to remain unless a scientific replenishment study was completed and the matter was fully considered by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and an environmental clearance was granted or rejected, Joshi added.

After getting fresh environmental clearances, sand mining in three leases had resumed in June 2021, Joshi added.

Slum rehabilitation

The Government of India was implementing the PMAY-U  scheme under  which  slum  redevelopment  was  being  done  through  ‘In-situ’  Slum  Redevelopment for  people  living  in  slums, Kaushal Kishore, Union minister of state in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs told the Rajya Sabha.

Telangana cities

No city in Telangana achieved a four-star rating according to the results of Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework 2.0, Kishore told the Rajya Sabha.

The Government of India had released Rs 196 crore each to the Smart Cities of Karimnagar and Greater Warangal, as of July 9, 2021, Kishore said. Of this, the cities had utilised Rs 183.36 crore and Rs 126.42 crore respectively. 

Climate-proofing

The performance  of  126  cities  was  evaluated  under  Climate  Smart  Cities Assessment Framework that served as a self-assessment tool for cities to monitor and report their performance on an annual basis and motivated them to improve, Kishore told the Rajya Sabha.

Climate resilience had been incorporated in the city-level Service Level Improvement Plans guidelines for urban local bodies to avail funds under AMRUT, Kishore added.
