As told to Parliament (July 19, 2022): Kharif sowing over 59 million hectares

Kharif sowing has commenced on time in major parts of the country. Area sown with Kharif crops as of July 15, 2022 is 59.21 million hectares (mha), compared to 59.13 mha during the corresponding period last year, Narendra Singh Tomar, Union minister of agriculture and farmers welfare, told the Lok Sabha July 19.

Kerala crop loss

Hydro-meteorological calamities affected 0.085 mha during 2021-22 in Kerala. However, Kerala has not reported crop area affected due to hydro-meteorological calamities during 2020-21 and 2022-23 (as of July 15, 2022), Tomar told the Lok Sabha.

Fisheries sector

The ‘Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies’ has been unanimously adopted June 17, 2022 during the Twelfth Session of the Ministerial Conference (MC-12) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) held at Geneva, Parshottam Rupala, minister of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, told the Lok Sabha.

Cyclone Asani 

Cyclone ‘Asani’ weakened near the coast and crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Narsapur in May 2022. No damage was reported from any state due to the cyclone except Andhra Pradesh.

Sixteen houses were damaged and 17 animals were found dead in Andhra Pradesh, according to the state government, Nityanand Rai, minister of state In The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, told the Lok Sabha.

Natural disasters

Some 889 human lives and 55,472 livestock had been lost due to natural disasters in India as on July 12, 2022, Rai said. The state-wise information on losses caused by natural calamities was not maintained centrally by the home affairs ministry, Rai said. 

Ultra-processed foods

About four per cent of total energy and 11 per cent of energy in the daily diet is contributed by ultra-processed foods in India’s rural and urban areas respectively, Bharati Pravin Pawar, minister of state in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, told the Rajya Sabha.

Infant Mortality Rate 

The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of India was 28 per 1000 live births in India in 2020, according to the latest bulletin of the Sample Registration System of Registrar General of India.

The IMR was 27 per 1000 live births at the global level in 2020, according to the UN Inter-Agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation, Pawar told the Rajya Sabha.

Rising cases of Monkeypox

There were a total of 4,920 laboratory confirmed cases of monkeypox according to the World Health Organization as of July 4, 2022, Pawar told the Rajya Sabha. 

Health Benefit Package

The National Health Authority has launched a new version of Health Benefit Packages (HBPs) 2022 under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana April 6, 2022.

HBPs 2022 consist of 1,949 procedures including secondary, tertiary and palliative care across 27 specialties, Pawar told the Rajya Sabha.

Plastic parks 

So far, 10 plastic parks have been approved in Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh and are currently in various stages of completion, Bhagwanth Khuba, minister of state for chemicals and fertilizers and new & renewable energy, told the Rajya Sabha.
