Parliamentary Digest (August 4, 2022): A million tonnes of e-waste generated in 2019-20

Some 1,014,961 tonnes of e-waste were generated in 2019-20 in India from 21 types of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) notified under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, Ashwini Kr Choubey, minister of state in the Union Ministry Of Environment, Forest and Climate Change told the Rajya Sabha August 4, 2022.

E-surveillance 

E-surveillance systems have been set up in the Corbett Tiger Reserve (Uttarakhand), Kaziranga Tiger Reserve (Assam) and Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh).

They have been set up with funding support from the ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger and Grants-in-Aid to National Tiger Conservation Authority, Choubey told the Rajya Sabha.

Rural air quality 

Some 24 stations for monitoring air quality have been set up in the rural areas of Punjab, while two have been established in Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

In addition, 17 new monitoring stations have been sanctioned to be established in Himachal Pradesh (5), Kerala (2), Mizoram (5), Odisha (2), Tripura (1) and Uttar Pradesh in 2021-22, Choubey told the Rajya Sabha.

Plastic waste 

Some 3.47 million tonnes per annum (TPA) of plastic waste was generated in India according to the Annual Report of the Central Pollution Control Board for 2019-20.

Of this, 1.58 million TPA was recycled and 0.167 million TPA was co-processed in cement kilns. In addition, waste-to-oil projects have been set up in in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, Choubey told the Rajya Sabha.

Drinking water

Around 99.3 million (51.96 per cent) of 191.1 million rural households in India had tap water supply in their homes as on August 2, 2022. Some 1.67 million of 1.69 million rural habitations in villages across the country have provision of potable drinking water with sources at a reasonable distance.

However, 0.026 million (1.54 per cent) rural habitations are reported to have water quality issues in drinking water sources, Prahlad Singh Patel, minister of state for Jal Shakti told the Lok Sabha.

Biofuels production

Oil mining companies have issued Letters of Intent (LoIs) for 42 biodiesel plants, having cumulative annual biodiesel production capacity of about 34 crore litres.

The current percentage of blending of biodiesel in diesel is less than one per cent, Rameswar Teli, minister of state in the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas told the Lok Sabha.
