
Kerala recorded the highest number of landslides in India in the last seven years, Jitendra Singh, Union minister for earth sciences told the Lok Sabha July 27, 2022.
Some 2,239 of the 3,782 major landslides in the country in the past seven years took place in Kerala, Singh said. West Bengal recorded the second-highest number of landslides, with 376 landslides between 2015 and 2022.
Heatwave in India
India suffered spells of heatwave during March and April 2022. The average maximum temperature of March 2022 was the highest for All India (33.1 degrees Celsius) and northwest India (30.7°C).
It was the second-highest for central India (35.2°C), according to data from 1901-2022. The average maximum temperature of April 2022 was the highest for central India (38.04°C) and for northwest India (36.32°C) and third-highest for All India (35.3°C) for 1901-2022, Singh said.
The average number of heatwave days was highest in Uttarakhand in 2022, according to the data presented in Parliament. The average number of heatwave days was 28 in 2022, Singh said.
Food waste
India’s estimated household food waste is 50 kilograms per capita per year, which is less than that in many developed countries, Ashwini Kr Choubey, Union minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution told the Lok Sabha.
Karnataka coffee
Some 23,140 million tonnes of Arabica coffee crop was lost in the last harvesting season (October 2021 to March 2022) due to untimely rain in the coffee-growing regions, Anupriya Patel, minister of state in The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry told the Lok Sabha.
Railways water management
The Indian Railways had rolled out the Indian Railway Water Policy 2017 in order to promote water use efficiency and preservation of water.
This was done to contribute towards India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) of a 20 per cent reduction in water consumption by 2030, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union minister of railways, communications and
electronics and information technology told the Lok Sabha.
Avalanches and lightning
Avalanches / snowfall caused 12 deaths in 2021-22 according to the Defence Research and Development Organisation. Lightning killed 2,862 people in 2020 according to the National Crime Record Bureau, Nityanand Rai, minister of state in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs told the Rajya Sabha.
Malnutrition reduction
Stunting among Indian children has reduced to 35.5 per cent from 38.4 per cent, according to the Fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 (2019-21), when compared to NHFS-4.
Wasting has reduced to 19.3 per cent from 21.0 per cent and underweight prevalence has reduced from to 32.1 per cent from 35.8 percent, Smriti Zubin Irani, Union minister for women and child development told the Rajya Sabha.
