Environment Programme, for his contribution to environmental conservation. His initial research interest concerned the field of cytogenetics. But thereafter, it has shifted to the conservation and utilisation of biodiversity, biomass production and environmental research and development in general.

In a career spanning almost half a century, Khoshoo has also taught at the universities of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Recently, the 127th Infantry Battalion Ecological Task force - the first of its kind in the world -was honoured by the government of India for the exemplary work done on war-footing to regenerate the ecology of the Mussoorie hills in the Himalaya. The task force was created during Khoshoo's tenure as environment secretary to the Government of India (1982-85). Much of Khoshoo's work holds significance for the Indian subcontinent as a whole. He firmly believes in the importance of regional environmental planning for long-term ecological and economic security of the region.
