A low pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka-Goa coasts by the evening of May 21, 2025 and may intensify into a depression by May 22, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its daily bulletin.
Extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over Konkan & Goa and coastal Karnataka on May 21. Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rain with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kilometres per hour) is likely over Kerala and Karnataka during May 21-27.
In western India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Madhya Maharashtra (May 21-23), Konkan & Goa (May 21-24) and Gujarat (May 23-25), with thundersquall activity reaching up to 70 kmph in these areas between May 21-23.
A dust storm with winds of 40-50 kmph is very likely over western Rajasthan on May 22 and 23.
Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of west Rajasthan during May 21-23 and again on May 24-25. Heat wave conditions are also likely in isolated pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, east Rajasthan, south Uttar Pradesh and north Madhya Pradesh between May 21-23.
Hot and humid weather is expected in Odisha on May 21 and 22. Warm night conditions are likely over parts of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir during May 21-23.
In northeast India, widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) is likely during the next seven days. Isolated very heavy rain is expected over Assam and Meghalaya on May 21.
In east and central India, heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on May 21, Bihar on May 21 and 23 and Jharkhand on May 21 and 22. Thundersqualls (50-70 kmph) are likely in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh on May 21-22.
In the south, isolated heavy rain is expected over Tamil Nadu on May 21 and over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana on May 21, 22 and 27.
Conditions are likely to become favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala during the next 3-4 days. The monsoon has already advanced over more parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the northeastern Bay.
Fishermen were advised by the IMD to not to venture into the east-central and southeast Arabian Sea, as well as along and off the Kerala, Karnataka, Konkan, Goa and adjoining Gujarat coasts between May 21-26 due to rough sea conditions.
