Daily weather tracker: Monsoon advances over Mumbai, Bengaluru and Northeast India

Extreme rain likely in Kerala and coastal Karnataka on May 26-27; Heatwave conditions likely in isolated pockets of west Rajasthan till May 28

The southwest monsoon has advanced further into more parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Karnataka including Bengaluru, as well as the entire Northeast region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its daily weather update.

Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Kerala, coastal and south interior Karnataka, the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra and the Konkan region including Mumbai city on May 26 and 27. Ghat areas of Tamil Nadu are also likely to receive extremely heavy rain on May 26. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected to persist over these regions till June 1.

In the west, isolated extremely heavy rain is very likely over Konkan and ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on May 26 and 27. Gujarat may experience thundersqualls with winds reaching 50-60 kilometres per hour, gusting to 70 kmph on May 26. Isolated heavy rain is likely over Marathwada during May 26-28 and Gujarat during May 26-29.

In the northeast, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rain is expected during the next seven days, with isolated heavy rainfall over most states. Very heavy rain is likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during May 28-June 1 and over Assam and Meghalaya during May 29-June 1.

In the south, thunderstorms with gusty winds (40-50 kmph) and isolated extremely heavy rain are expected over Tamil Nadu on May 26 and heavy to very heavy rain through May 31. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana will see thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain over the next five days. Thundersqualls are likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during May 27-29.

In east and central India, Bihar may experience thundersqualls on May 26. Isolated heavy rain is likely over Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Odisha and West Bengal and Sikkim till May 31. Odisha may also witness very heavy rain on May 28 and 29.

In the northwest, thunderstorms with gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during May 27-June 1. Himachal Pradesh may experience thundersqualls on May 27, 28, 30 and 31 and isolated hailstorms on May 27 and 28. Isolated heavy rain is also likely in Uttarakhand (May 28-30) and Himachal Pradesh (May 30-31).

Heatwave conditions are very likely to persist in isolated pockets of West Rajasthan from May 26-28.
