A World Wide Fund for Nature's (wwf) study has estimated that every day an equivalent of 270,000 trees are flushed or thrown away in the form of tissue papers.
The report compared the record of the five largest European tissue producers -- Procter & Gamble, sca, Kimberly Clark, Metsa Tissue and Georgia Pacific. It demanded that all companies use more recycled material and less "high-quality virgin fibres" taken directly from forests.
wwf found that the majority of the tissue products sold to European households contained alarmingly low levels of recycled fibres. In their overall rankings, sca tissues came out as the best while the manufacturer of Andrex toilet paper and Kleenex tissues have been ranked the worst amongst selected companies.
wwf says that offices, schools, and hotels mostly buy products made from recycled fibres, while supermarkets and retailers continue to offer non-recycled products to consumers.
