AFTFR health care and the agriculturalsector, environment is a major growtharea for the application of biotechnology. A recent report published by theOrganisation of Economic Cooperationand Development (OECD) titled "Biotechnology for a Clean Environment"indicates that biotechnology is likelyto play a key role in cleaning up theenvironment. According to the OECDreport, the major advantages of environmental biotechnology is that the methods are relatively simple and enablecosts to be trimmed. Savings of 60 to 80per cent are possible compared withchemical processes. Biotechnologicalsoil clean up enables pollution to be"eaten up" by micro-organisms.
