Delhi witnessed first death due to swine flu when a 51-year-old woman succumbed to death on Friday.
The woman who was a resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh was admitted in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) on December 21 and was in critical state.
"The patient at the time of admission to Sri Ganga Ram Hospital was in a critical state. She had lung failure and was on high frequency ventilator support. Her diagnosis at Ghaziabad hospital and SGRH confirmed it to be a case of swine flu. Despite best efforts of doctors at SGRH, the patient expired on the morning of December 24," stated a hospital statement.
She was shifted from Yashoda Hospital to Columbia Asia Hospital in Ghaziabad, before being moved to Delhi.
As per reports, the health department has given tamiflu to all who came in the contact of the woman including hospital staff as well.
Last week, three deaths due to swine flu were reported from Hyderabad’s Gandhi Medical College and Hospital. More than a dozen have been reportedly hospitalised also.
In 2009, swine flu killed more than 2,000 people when it became a global pandemic. Since then deaths on this scale have not been reported.
