A 12-day training workshop for mechanics of two-stroke autorickshaws have resulted in widespread protest from the people and environmentalists in Bangladesh. The primary reason for the uproar against the workshop is that these 'baby taxis' with two-stroke engines have been causing serious health problems as they emit carbon monoxide (CO) and poison the atmosphere. Despite the environmental and health implications, the workshop has been planned by the ministry of environment and forest, Uttara Motors and the Society for Urban Environmental Protection (SUEP), with financial assistance from the World Bank.
