On June 28, The New York Times (NYT) started a Chinese-language website that generated so much interest in China that two of its microblog accounts drew thousands of followers.
But they were taken offline for several hours. This has happened soon after the Chinese government gagged Bloomberg news. The Chinese blogsphere was rife with news that NYT was also censored. The outage was, however, remedied in a few hours.
“We have no indication whether the microblogs went offline because of the company or its content or a technical problem,” NYT’s spokesperson Craig Smith said.
