THE men in uniform have found a n&vocation: that of taking care of theenvironment. The army unit stationedat Madras - in their bid to green thecity - is setting up a 'zodiacal park' atthe local Island Grounds.
Traditionally used as a logisticalbase for army material, vehicles andmen, the sprawling Island Groundsspread over more than 100 acres willnow be converted into a wooded park.The theme of the park centres arouncthe zodiacal signs and will contain plants which relate to the signs. Theunderlying message to the citizens is"whatever be your particular zodiacsign, come and plant a tree associatec with it".
The army is willing to take care ofthe planted saplings. Work has alreactbegun at the Grounds; facilities such asa jogging track amidst the trees, a pondand a sanctuary are the other plannedattractions. The park will be open tcdedicated greens on the lines of a limited membership availability.
