Farming in desert, and that too fish farming, would seem an impossibletask to most. But a team ofenterprising farmers led byYitzhak Levy has developed asuper intensive technique toproduce yields which are notonly profitable but alsomuch higher than those offish ponds in favourable conditions.

The Nizanne Sinai farming settlement lies in theNegev desert in southernIsrael. The fish ponds teeming with thousands of tilapiaand carp are enclosed ineight green bubbles. Thegreen bubbles are made ofplastic sheets and are well-ventilated. The computer-controlled bubble ponds areheated with the help of thethe blazing desert sun.According to farmers, theponds produce upto 20 kg offish per cu m - the highestyield in the world for closedwarm water ponds. Eachus $650,000 pool produceseight to ten tonnes of fishannually.
