A high-molecular silicon plastic that can withstand temperatures ranging between 400-500C has been developed by the Japanese firm Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals Inc. The plastic is made of 10 layers of carbon fiber soaked in high-molecular liquid silicon. Which is solidified by heating to around 200C. The manufacturers claim that the material does not weaken even when exposed to a temperature of 400C. It neither burns nor does it generate smoke when a gas flame is applied. The company hopes that the plastic will find uses in rockets and space shuttles as well as other aerospace applications. The firm is conducting experiments to see if the material can endure temperatures higher than 500C.
