Rural burden

DTE Staff

The state of health of women in rural India may be one of the worst in the world. An eight-month-pregnant woman spends two-thirds of her day working -- grinding grain, preparing food, fetching water. Worse, most women resume work even before they have fully recovered from childbirth. This can lead to devastating consequences for a woman's health and undermine her ability to carry out her responsibilities, both productive and reproductive. Poor care during pregnancy could be the reason behind the high mortality rate of children in the age group of 0-4.
