Two Italian policemen with a passion for solving crosswords have deciphered a coded text that appears to reveal the details of Europe’s biggest cocainesmuggling mafia. The document was found during a probe into a high-profile murder in Rome in January last year. It apparently had alphabets devised by members of the Ndrangheta, a crime network that operates across Europe from its base in Italy’s Calabria region.
The letters look like a mix of Arabic, Cyrillic and Chinesetype script, says BBC’s Allan Johnston. The text describes how to recognise a mafioso —“Man of Honour”—by the signs around him.
