A change in agronomic practices iswhat researchers at the RegionalResearch Station, Vriddhachalamand the Sugarcane Research Station,Cuddalore, both at Tamil Nadu, recommend to improve the quality ofsugar-cane juice and the resultantend-product of sugar. The juice isjudged by the amount of sucrosepresent, and should also contain lessamounts of reducing sugars, andstarches among others as a measureof its purity. Some of the advisedpractices include planting of high-sugared varieties and harvestingthem within a year. Avoidingintense application of nitrogenand extending the irrigation interval help to stabilise the sucrosepercentage.
