A deadly collapse at the Kalando copper and cobalt mine in Lualaba Province has once again exposed the risks facing Congo’s artisanal miners. A makeshift bridge gave way as panicked workers tried to flee gunshots and rising floodwaters, leaving 49 dead and many critically injured.
