The Supreme Court has raised concerns over both the government's lack of action and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) ambitious promise to eliminate the capital's untreated legacy waste by December, 2028.
A Bench led by Justice AS Oka posed a simple yet pressing question to the MCD: "Where do you dispose of the 3,000 metric tonnes (mt) of solid waste generated daily in Delhi?"
Justice Oka pointed out that while the MCD had assured the court in an affidavit that it would address the issue of untreated waste, the corporation remained “conspicuously silent” on its current waste disposal practices.
Menaka Guruswamy, senior advocate representing the MCD, assured the court that a detailed response would be provided on January 27, when the court would hear the matter specifically regarding this question.
