The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)’s standing committee has approved the installation of an ingesta plant for the Ghazipur slaughterhouse — one of the conditions required for reopening the abattoir, the MCD informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on July 30, 2025.
The Ghazipur slaughterhouse in Delhi, the city's only legal abattoir, was briefly shut down in 2022 for violation of environmental norms.
The meeting of the standing committee was held on July 16, 2025, and the panel has approved the proposal for installation of the ingesta plant for Ghazipur. The work order would be issued within two weeks, the counsel appearing for the MCD submitted.
After the issuance of the work order, the work of installing the ingesta plant would be completed within three to six months. The bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava directed MCD to file minutes of the meeting and the work order, along with the further progress report, within 8 weeks
Ingesta plants are set up to process the undigested waste of animals, which along with dung, is converted into bio-fertiliser.
Fresh inspection would be conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) on 27 hostels and paying guest (PGs) accommodations operating in Greater Noida to ascertain the source of water, including extraction of ground water by these hostels. Appropriate action would be ensured where required and an action taken report filed, the UPPCB assured the NGT on July 30, 2025.
The applicant, Nishant Singh, was seeking compliance of the NGT order dated November 6, 2023. The NGT, in the November 2023 order, had taken note of the allegation of the applicant in respect of non-establishment of a sewage treatment plant and extraction of groundwater for commercial purpose by hostels and PGs operating in Greater Noida.
Compliance report by way of affidavit dated July 29, 2025, was filed by the UPPCB stating that all the hostels are connected with the sewage system of Greater Noida.
On inspection, they are found to have generator sets of different capacity and some of them were using DG sets of more than 25 KVA in violation of the norms. The report stated that of 41 hostels, three are closed and five do not have DG sets. Six hostels have DG sets of less than 19KW capacity.
Show cause notices have been issued to 27 hostels under the Air Act, 1981. The counsel appearing for the UPPCB submitted that a reply to the show cause notices by the 27 hostels is awaited. Action would be taken on receiving it.
The compliance report of the UPPCB was silent on the issue of ground water extraction by these hostels, the court pointed out.
The NGT on July 30, 2025, took up the matter of death of a 13-year-old boy by drowning in an open drain filled with garbage and filth in Rajendra Nagar Extension area of Delhi.
The Government of NCT of Delhi (GNCTD) had filed a reply dated July 26, 2025. It stated that a sum of Rs 5 lakh sanctioned by the district magistrate has been paid to the next kin of the deceased.
