A solar-powered water pasteurisingdevice called Solsaver, designed byJohn Grandinetti, president ofGrand Solar Incorporated ofHawaii, USA, may bring an end topeople falling prey to water-bornediseases (World Watch, VoJ8, No 5).

The Solsaver uses thermal actionto move the water which flowsthrough copper tubing into a glasssolar collector for heating, and is letout through a valve which openswhen water reaches a temperatureof 65C. Awaiting field trials, Sol-saver comes in various sizes, with thesmallest providing roughly 1361itre(I) of pasteurised water per sunnyday, and the largest yielding 1,091 l.
