How cells differentiate

A research group from the University of Tokyo's Institute of Applied Microbiology claims to have discovered a gene in fruitflies that helps determine the shape of the body as it develops from a single cell into a mature, multicellular organism. The gene acts like a brake on cellular differentiation, keeping cells from heading down the wrong path as immature cells differentiate into specialised cells that develop into body parts such as wings and legs.
