THE government of India has awarded the first ever industrial growthcentr& in Assam to the district ofSonitpur. An amount of Rs 50 lakh hasrecently been sanctioned by the Unionministry of industry, out of which therewill be a total capital outlay of Rs 30crore for the entire peoject to be developed and completed during the NinthFive Year plan at the Balipara development block in the district.

Iswar Prasanna Hazarika, memberof Parliament, announced that already1,500 bighas (bigha is a measurement ofland varying locally from 1/8 to 2/5 of ahectare) of land have been handed overto the state for the industrial growthcentre.,According to Hazarika, the proposed Lntr@e would greatly benefit andbrighte4,the prospect of industrialisation in this backward region on thenorth bank of the Brahmaputra.

The centre would have all kinds ofprovisions required to set up varioussmall and medium industries in thecomplex, besides arranging for provisions to assist in the preparation ofinvestment and project proposals, infrastructural facilities and the like neededby the units.
