A radar system on a microchip, costing less than $10.5 has been developed by American scientists. It is sosensitive that it can monitor thebreathing of a baby to cut down cotdeaths, pinpoint human heartbeatsin collapsed buildings, detect burglars, find landmines, replace thedoctor's stethoscope or simply helppark the car. Unlike the conventional radar, which sends out continuous waves, this one, calledMicropower Impulse Radar, usesshort elecromagnetic pulses.Powered by two 1.5 volt batteries, itdetects echoes of its signals fromobjects from between 15 cm to 100metres, and can be enhanced toreach up to 500 m.
