According to the sources in the PublicHealth and Engineering Department (PHED),Bangladesh, arsenic, a chemical whichcauses black foot disease, has beenfound in 44 of the 64 districts. Over25,000 tests conducted couritry-wideshowed that'21 per cent of the testedtubewells were contaminated above themaximum permissible limit of 0.05 mil-ligrams per litre. The PHED started monitoring the waterin the bordering districts of India in 1993.
