The country exportsalmost every part of thishuge non-flying bixd -feathers, meat, skin and eggs.Sales of ostrich meat, forexample, have more thandoubled in the last 5 years,climbing to us $66.5 millionfrom us $26 million. It is notsurprising, therefore, thatalmost a quarter of a millionof them are kept for poultryand breeding; and in the fertile West Cape region flocksof ostriches are seen roamingthe range.
Most of the ostrich-foods are shipped off tolapan, which has a huge market for it, but now even theand European countriesare developing a taste for the third.
