The state of Virginiais going to sue the US governmentdemanding US $1.5 million as itsshare ofthe money spent so far andfor future expenses required forcleaning up the pollution caused bya rayon fibre factory. The state hasalleged that the federal governmentwas aware of the pollution problems at the factory for years but itdid nothing to check them. The factory was closed down due to financial and environmental problemsin 1989, leaving behind a vast toxicsludge on the banks of the Shenandoah river. So far, the federalgovernment has spent US $25 million to clean the factory site.
