Kyrgyzstan’s National Security Service plans to begin monitoring of online news sites for content that it construes as hate speech, reports Institute for War and Peace Reporting. It is setting up a system to monitor Internet sites, particularly news sites with domain names ending with .kg, to identify content that could incite hatred on grounds of ethnicity, religion and regional origin. The initiative is in the wake of the ethnic violence that rocked southern Kyrgyzstan in 2010, and follows recommendations from a parliamentary committee. Civil society groups argue that the monitoring could result in censorship.
